Specific Controls for Bloodborne Pathogen Protection
Universal Precautions Policy
BLS will treat all blood and bodily fluids as potentially infectious.
Controls include:
- No direct contact with blood or bodily fluids.
- All biological materials must be sealed inside approved medical transport containers before courier pickup.
- Drivers are not authorized to open specimen containers.
- Drivers will refuse transport of leaking or improperly packaged specimens.
Engineering Controls
Engineering controls physically reduce exposure risk.
BLS will use:
- Leak-proof secondary transport containers
- Biohazard-labeled specimen transport bags
- Rigid medical specimen transport coolers
- Sharps-resistant transport containers (when required by client)
- Absorbent material inside specimen transport bags
- Temperature-controlled transport containers when required
Containers will meet Department of Transportation (DOT) biological material transport standards.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
BLS drivers will carry PPE in their vehicle at all times.
